My review is not nearly as technical as others due to me being way behind the 8 ball when it comes to electronics. I bought one of these Toshiba units because my very old Polaroid player would play store-bought dvd's just fine, but would play dvd movies that I had recorded from VHS tapes on my Go Video machine terribly. There were herky jerky movements, skips in the audio and pixillation plus dropouts continuously. I was reluctant to buy the Toshiba because I knew it wouldn't solve the problem, and I would get bogged down hooking it up and getting through the manual. WRONG. My hookup of the RCA cables to my old picture tube TV was easy, and I just popped in one of my old recorded movie dvd's. It played beautifully, with a picture quality that I didn't think possible with my ancient setup. I'll get to the instruction manual later. Thanks Toshiba, for solving my problem. But now I'll probably stay up half the night watching movies.

Customer Reviews

does the job - nice pic
I started being disappointed because I wrongfully thought this dvd player could read multi-region DVD, it doesn't. But then, I have to say that I decided to keep it for its image. the hdmi cable that comes with it is ridiculously short, so you end up buying another one, but once it's done and plugged in, the picture aspect is pretty good. For a non-HD dvd player, it looks upgraded. so overall, good product for the price (supposing you get it for a good price, of course)

Toshiba DVD
took a while to figure out to hook up for HDMI - print in manual was VERY SMALL....too small for the average reader -
once we called Toshiba (after being on hold for almost 1/2 an hour) - beautiful picture & a great rep for the company

Very good upscaled image quality
This model number, SDK1000, appears to be a package specifically sold at Costco. It includes an HDMI cable, in addition to composite RCA cables. The DVD player itself is super-thin and slim and small and lightweight, yet it does a very good job at upscaling regular DVD images to 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, as long as you use the HDMI cable. (In other words, upscaling is not available on RCA cables, composite or component.) Image quality and audio quality are both very good. I paid less than forty bucks at Costco for this, and I think it's a GREAT value.
The user's manual is hard to read, typical of electronics. The remote control is actually easy to use, once you get used to its layout, or just use a universal remote if you prefer.
